Bhaktapur

On continue nos visites autour de Kathmandu et aujourd'hui on est alle a Bhaktapur.
Située à 13 km à l’est de Kathmandu, la petite ville paysanne et artisanale de Bhaktapur a de jolies rues pavées de briques. Les traces architecturales et artistiques de cette ancienne cité newar sont conservées tout comme son caractère médiéval. Bhaktapur est l’une des trois anciennes capitales royales de la vallée du XIVe siècle, elle est encore appelée « la cité des Dévots ».
C'etait tres chouette et surtout on etait content de ne pas devoir voyager sur le toit du bus pour rentrer a Kathmandu! Prochaine etape, Phokara pour la randonnee dans la region de l'Annapurna.

The Dashain Festival, Kathmandu

Une fois par an, il y a un festival a Kathmandu, le Dashain festival. C'est en ce moment et on a pu voir quelques festivites... voila quelques informations et surtout, regardez la video de you tube ci-desous! Attention aux ames sensibles...

During the month of Kartik (late September and early October), the Nepalese people indulge in the biggest festival of the year, Dashain. Dashain is the longest and the most auspicious festival in the Nepalese annual calendar, celebrated by Nepalese of all caste and creed throughout the country. Dashain commemorates a great victory of the gods over the wicked demons.
The ninth day is called Nawami: Temples of mother goddess are filled with people from dawn till dusk. Animals mostly black buffaloes are slaughtered to honour Durga the goddess of victory and might and to seek her blessing. Military bands play war tunes, guns boom and officers with beautifully decorated medals in full uniform stand there. When the function ends the courtyard is filled ankle deep with blood. On this very day the god Vishwa Karma, the God of creativity is also worshiped.

Deuxieme etape: le Nepal!

Nous voila bien arrives au Nepal! Apres note premiere journee a Kathmandu, on peut dire qu'on est super contents d'etre la!! Il fait beau, c'est pas cher et les rues sentent tres bon les epices et la cuisine locale.....
On a deja hate de voir le reste du pays!!!
On restera quelques jours a Kathmandu, puis apres on ira faire une randonnee dans l'Himalaya et apres peut etre une autre reserve naturelle avec des tigres, des elephants... peut etre que cette fois je pourrais porter un bebe elephant dans mes bras?? ;-)

We've arrived in Nepal! After our first day in Kathmandu, we can say that we're very happy to be here! It's cheap, streets smell of spices and delicious food.... Can't wait to see the rest of the country!
We'll stay for a few days in Kathmandu and then go for a trek in the Himalayas. After that, we may go to a nature reserve for some jungle walk and wild animal spotting. Who knows, maybe this time, I'll get to carry a baby elephant in my arms! ;-)

5 semaines en Chine... 5 weeks in China...

Nous voila arrives a la fin de notre sejour en Chine. Nous avons passe 5 semaines...incroyables dans beaucoup de manieres!!
La Chine est definitivement un pays interessant et intriguant, des fois meme un peu incomprehensible. On est a un moment de changement pour le pays, entre un pays du tiers monde en verge de redevenir une grande puissance mondiale.

On a commence par Pekin ou nous avons passe une semaine a visiter la cite interdite, la grande muraille, le palais d'ete, Tianamen square... C'etait impressionant autant pour le detail et l'ampleur des monuments, mais aussi la foule! Absolument incroyable de voir autant de monde. On se rend vraiment compte des 1.5 billions de gens en Chine!! Pas un endroit sans touristes, chinois pour la plupart. On a du se plier en 15 pour prendre des photos sans personnes autour de nous!
On a vecu notre premiere arnaque monumentale pour un faux appareil photo mais grace a mes racines francaises, je me suis pas laissee faire et ai recupere mon argent aussitot! Conseil au cas ou ca vous arrive: ne cherchez pas a negocier, demander a voir le chef direct!

Ensuite, on est alle en Mongolie Interieure en bus de nuit, faute de ne pas etre alles en Mongolie! La on a vecu une experience traumatisante a la vue des toilettes dans la station de repos. Intimite, on oublie! On a aussi fait l'experience des fameux crachats partout! Depuis les JO a Pekin, ils mettent des amendes aux gens qui crachent partout donc on en avait pas trop vu. Alors la regle pour ceux qui veulent entrer en compet, on va chercher le plus de glaire possible jusqu'au fond de la gorge et peut etre meme de l'estomac a entendre et on fait le plus de bruit possible quand on crache! Charmant....
Enfin bref, apres cette agreable pause, on est arrive a Baotou a 4h du matin ou les taxis attendaient la chaire fraiche! Pour seulement 500 metres a faire, on a eu la chance de faire la visite de toutes les autoroutes de la region et meme l'aeroport! Le chauffeur devait penser qu'on dormait encore... Cette fois, c'est Mark qui s'est ennerve et a refuse de payer la somme. Apres 40 min de gestes pr dire qu'on etait pas debiles et a montrer le tour en voiture, le chauffeur et ses 8 amis chauffeurs (je faisais pas la maligne la...) ont abandone et on a pu aller dans notre chambre avec la moquette mal lavee qui pue et laisse plein de poils aux pieds.

Tout ca a bien ete oublie quand on est alle dans le desert! Des gorges de sables magnifiques et meme une premiere ballade a dos de chameaux!

Apres ca, on a conclu qu'on ne prendrait plus le bus donc on est alle reserve notre billet de train pr aller a Xi'an. Malheureusement, il ne restait que des places assises, pour un trajet de 24h!! C'etait long... mais au moins on a pu decouvrir un peu de la vraie vie chinoise. C'etait tres interessant de voir un esprit de communaute et chaleur entre les gens, meme s'ils ne se connaissent pas.

A Xi'an, on est alle voir l'armee de Terracotta. Impressionnant comme vous pouvez l'imaginez de voir ces centaines de soldats sculptes dans un tel detail. L'armee et les chevaux se trouvent a environ 4km de la tombe de l'empereur donc on s'est qd meme pose la question pourquoi il a mis son armee si loin de sa tombe si c'est pour le proteger apres la mort?... Aussi, une telle entreprise a du prendre des centaines d'annees et d'hommes a faire, donc comment se fait-il que personne n'en ait entendu parle jusqu'en 1974?.... hum... peut etre un ptit coup pr raviver le tourisme?...
La ville de Xi'an etait tres chouette et beaucoup plus relax que Pekin, un vrai plaisir.
Pres de Xi'an, on est alle dans la montagne de Hua Shan pour voir le leve du soleil.

Ensuite, on est alle dans le sud de la Chine. Cette fois, on etait mieux organise et avons pris un train couchette, 5 etoiles compare au siege! On est arrive a Yangshuo, la ou il y a ces montagnes qui ressemblent a des oeufs! C'etait magnifique! Meme avec les 40 degres et 100% humidite! On a passe qq jours la bas a se promener dans la campagne. Les paysages etaient magiques...
Apres ca, on a fait un detour de 2 jours dans des terraces de plantations de riz, absolument magnifique et une chambre d'hotel splendide avec vue pr 13 euros! Ca compense pr les matelas durs et les moquettes crassouses des autres nuits!


En meme temps, on se torturait l'esprit a savoir si on allait au Nepal par le Tibet ou si on prenait l'avion. Le Tibet etant complique et cher on a decide d'aller au Yunnan, sud Ouest, ou les paysages et culture sont comme au Tibet. Arrives a Kunming, la capitale, on a change notre avis, apres encore du torturage d'esprit et sommes partis a Chengdu dans le Sichuan plus au nord pr organiser un voyage au Tibet qu'on avait trouve pas cher. Dommage on a pas eu le temps de visiter la region, mais on a organise notre voyage au Tibet! 2 jours dans le train le plus haut du monde, visite de Lhassa et ses temples pendant 2 jours, puis voyage en jeep avec 7 autres personnes entre le Tibet et la frontiere du Nepal, en passant par le camp de base du Mont Everest... ca fait rever hein... et ben juste en reve car apres 5 jours et apres avoir paye notre caution, le bureau de tourisme du Tibet a decide de fermer les entrees aux touristes pour 2-3 semaines!!!!! Retour a la case depart.... On a qd meme reussi a reserve des vols pr Kathmandu et on part ce vendredi 25. enfin, on le croira quand on sera arrives a Kathmandu!

Pendant ces 5 jours, on est quand meme alles dans la reserve naturelle de Jiuzhaigou. Apres un voyage de 14 heures, pour 360km seulement dans une route de montagne devastee par le tremblement de terre d'il y a 1an 1/2 et pas entierement reconstruite, on est arrive, entiers! (car on a doute plusieurs fois...) Dans un endroit splendide avec des cascades d'eau et lacs aux eaux turquoises.... On a dormi dans une famille Tibetaine, assiste a un mariage traditionel ou on a meme danse la danse tibetaine.
Finalement on croyait que c'etait une semaine de trop mais c'etait la meilleure experience qu'on ait eu!!

Voila notre sejour en Chine! Desole c'est assez long, mais tellement a dire! A part ces visites, on a aussi decouvert une population acceuillante et chaleureuse pour la plupart. Les gens sont un peu etonnes de voir des etrangers mais sourient tres vite! Pendant nos longues heures dans le train, on a pu parle a beaucoup de gens, de la culture et la politique, un sujet bien interessant ici...

La nourriture a aussi ete bonne et variee. Pas si differente de ce qu'on trouve dans les resto chinois chez nous mais tres bons!

Encore un grand merci a vous pour tous vos cadeaux de mariage qui nous aident a vivre une experience formidable!! Nous sommes tres reconnaissants de pouvoir faire cette aventure.



Here, we are, already over a month in our travel and finished with China! We spent 5 weeks, incredible and unbelievable in lots of ways!! China is definitely an interesting country, intriguing, beyound understanding... It is at a time of big change and we can see lots of oppostions trying to live together, which makes it very contradictory in some ways.

We started in Beijing where we spent a week visting the forbidden city, great wall, summer palace and all other monuments... It was really impressive, as much for the detail as the scale of the monuments, but also the crowd! Absolutely unbelievable to see so many people! You can definitely realise that 1.5 billions of people live there!! Not a place wiuthout touriss, Chinese for most of them. We had to bend several times to take photos of us without anyone around!
We lived our first ripp-off, pretty good one for a fake camera... I think my french roots helped me and I got all my money back!
Good tip in case it happens to you: just ask to see the manager straight away!

After Beijimg, we went to Inner Mongolia on a night bus. I had a traumatising experience with the services toilets...forget about intimacy!! There, we also experienced the big spitting. It's banned in beijing so we we didn't hear it so much but there, they were clearly going crazy and evacuating all the snott they had been storing in their throat! if you want to enter the competition, make sure you make as much noise as possible when bringing up the snott and then spitt, still in high noise as strongly as possible. Charming...
Nervermind... After this we arrive in Baotou at 4am where taxis were waiting for us like flyes around the bus. For only 500m to do, we got lucky enough to get a tour of all the motorwys of the area and even the airport! The driver must have thought we were still asleep... this time, Mark didn't take it and after 40 min explaining by gestures that we weren't stupid in front of all his 8 driver friends (I wasn't so proud then...) they gave up. After that, we were welcome by a lovely room with damp and smelly carpet with hair that stick to your foot if you walk bear foot...
All this was forgotten when we arrived in the desert though! It was absolutely amazing to see these sand gorges. We even had our first camel ride, pretty cool!

After this, as we were ready to move on and had conclued "no more buses", we got on a 24h long train to Xi'an. We weren't so well organised and had to seat for the whole time... A little uncomforable but we got to see the real life. We discovered an amazing community spirit among the people. It was nice...
In Xi'an, we went to see the terracotta army. It was really impressive, as you can imagine, to see these hundreds of soldiers, sculpted in such detail. One thing intrigued us though... the army lies 4km away from the emperor's tomb. If they are supposed to protect him in the after life, why are they so far??? And also, such an enterprise must have taken hundred of years and men to produce. How come nobody heard about it until 1974?? hum...maybe a trick to revive tourism in the area?....
Xi'an city was really nice and much more relax that Beijing, a real pleasure...
Near Xi'an we went to the mountain of Hua Shan to see the sunset and sunrise.

After this, we went to southern China. This time on a sleeper bus, it was like travelling in 5 stars!! We arrived in yangshuo, where there are the eggs mountains! It was also so beautiful, even in the 40 degrees and 100% humidity! We spent a few days there, walking around the countryside. The landscapes were really magical...
We then went to Longji where they have rice terraces. It was really beautiful too...

We were tortuing our minds to find a way to get to Nepal. Tibet, fly, tibet, fly?..... It was rather complicated, expensive so we decided to go to Yunnan, south of Tibet where culture and landscapes are similar to Tibet. We got to Kunming, stayed for only 2 days and went to Chengdu to organise a trip to Tibet! And we did! A 8 days long trip, 2days on the highest train in the world, 2 days in Lhassa and then travel by jeep to the nepalese border via the Everest Base camp. Sounds good, doesn't it?! Well just sounds because after we paid ou deposit, they cancelled 5 days later!! The tourism bureau closed the doors to Tibet because of public hjoliday and also some hidden killings we heard of. In the end, we got cheap flights to Kathmandu directly!

During the waiting week, we went to a nature reserve in Jiuzaighou, After 14 hours to do 360km on a devastated road (by an earthquake a 1 year 1/2 ago) we arrived alive! We did doubt at some points... The horrible trip was worth it when we saw the turquoise blue lakes, waterfalls, local villages and tasted the food! We slept in a Tibetan family and even got to attend a wedding party and danced the traditional dance!
We thought it was going to be a week to much but it turned out to be the best one!

One of the best days was the last one though... when we went to the panda centre and I held one in my arms!!!! I had been waiting for this the whole and it's not the 100 yuan that would stop me to hold this adorable animal for 60 seconds only! No regret though, I feel different now... ;-)

My words seem that we had an amazing time and we did! Although I think the memory will grow better in our mind as we were happy to leave. There are so many contradicting or frustrating things that it was getting on our nerves sometimes.
We met some lovely people and it was very interesting to talk to them about their culture and politics, a rather interesting topic here...

We're in Nepal now and have spent our first day in Kathmandu. It seems absolutely amazing and ompletely different! It smells so good of the spices and food and it is so colourful... People speak english which also makes a big difference!

A big thank you again for all your wedding presents. It helps us having a wonderful time and we are so greateful...
